Welcome to episode 100 of Faster Than Normal! I'm so very excited, humbled, and amazed - We're at 100 episodes! Who ever thought? 100 episodes of any podcast is hard enough, but a podcast about ADHD, hosted by someone with ADHD? That's an accomplishment!

This week, to celebrate episode 100, we're interviewing two parents of an ADHD kid. But when this kid was growing up, ADHD didn't exist. "Sit down, you're disrupting the class" did.

But through love, determination, and support, this kid made it through school and college (sometimes by the skin of his teeth) and wound up doing ok for himself.

My two guests today are none other than my wonderful parents, Nancy and Ira Shankman. I'm so thankful to them not just for coming on the podcast, but for everything they've done for me over the past 45 years.

This episode is dedicated to everyone who's been touched in some way by ADHD, and recognizes, even just a little bit, that those of us who have "faster brains" are NOT broken, and NOT disabled. In fact, once anyone with ADHD learns how to use that faster brains, the entire world is at their fingertips.

Thanks to my mom and dad, I learned how. And to help others learn how to do the same is the whole reason I started Faster Than Normal in the first place.

Enjoy - and as always - thank you for listening.

To the next hundred and beyond,

-Peter Shankman

In this episode we talk about:

2:30- Welcome Nancy & Ira Shankman!!

4:00- Tell everyone a little about yourselves

5:20- So you two weren’t necessarily entrepreneurs were you?

7:00- What was your first memory, or sign that I was different somehow?

9:00- Let’s talk about my first experiences with school, notes from teachers, etc.

10:42- Looking back, how did me ‘getting in trouble’ feel to you two?

12:27- Do you think teachers still have the ability, considering all of the current pressures they face, to adapt for and acknowledge the kids with ADHD, or even those who just might need a little more help?

14:25- I figured out and invented so many of my own survival skills. Considering all I went through, and all that you witnessed, did you ever stop and think: “What do we do here for him”?

17:20- What do you think it was, that made it possible for me to always bounce back? (i.e. from frustration, mean kids, illness, failures, etc)

18:45- What would you tell other parents who’s kids are coming home with similar complaints to what I received?

20:45- “Looking back I think we were more frantic and worried at times than you were”.

23:00- At what point did you begin to really trust my decisions?

23:50- What would you say to parents who’s children are asking for dopamine-fueling experiences? (often unwittingly)

26:10- On being supportive.

27:07- On not having a fear of doing something differently.

29:00- Any advice to parents for when their kids come home and say: “I’m broken”?

31:38- If ADHD had existed in medical journals when I was young, and the doctors had recommended you treat me with medication, would you have chosen to medicate me? Would you today?

33:12- Thank you Mom and Dad!!! This was awesome!! If you don’t mind, how can people get in touch with you?

Nancy@Shankman.com or on Twitter @ChiorDirector

Ira@Shankman.com or on Twitter @MusicProf

33:50- That’s Shankman.com btw :-D

24:22- A HUGE THANK YOU TO LISTENERS!!

If you live near Port Jervis, NY or have kids that play basketball in the area, then you most likely already know of Andrew Marotta. I did not, until he reached out to me a few months back. I read his book in one weekend and loved it! Both of my parents are retired educators and administrators, so Andrew and I share way more than just the common thread of having ADHD!  I’ve since given them both a copy :-) He and I connected for a phone interview just a few days after that first read and this is how it went. This week's episode is a special one to me. Meet Denis Morton, one of the many talented instructors at OnePeloton. What I love so much about this interview is Denis' honesty, and the forthcoming way in which he shares his wins and losses in his world, and how everything he's done has helped shape his life as it is today.

I'm lucky to have had the chance to interview Denis, and you're lucky to hear it.

This is one of the best conversations I've had on FTN since I launched the podcast over two years ago.

“Biography of a Struggling Student:  My Story”. This is what Brian Seth Perler sends to me when I ask for his bio. Hah! I certainly can relate to that- I was that kid too. He struggled really hard during high school and then failed out of two colleges, finally returning home and moving in with his grandmother. Things were not great. Through keeping his chin up and repeatedly asking for help- which was also tough to do, he finally got a minimum wage job working with students at a company called ‘At Your School’. There he found something that he was good at, a wonderful mentor and a passion that continues to fuel his path. I hope you will feel encouraged by getting to know Seth Perler and ‘the rest of his story’ in this episode of Faster Than Normal.  Enjoy!

0:48- Intro and welcome, Seth!

1:48- Seth’s story, struggles in school and how that can feel when your a kid, or at anytime for that matter

4:56- What was your moment of change and how did you begin?

6:00- How does one ‘accidentally’ get a job working with ADHD kids?

6:47- What made you certain about your newfound path?

This episode is underwritten by HealthIQ, and we couldn’t be happier to have them! See, one of the things I’m so passionate about when I talk about how I use my ADHD to my advantage is exercise, right? It’s obvious that a workout in the morning greatly boosts my brainpower and lets me use my faster brain to do great things.

But here’s the other benefit of exercise: Engagement in high-intensity exercise once per week decreases risk for cardiovascular mortality by 39% for men and 51% for women, and according to a 2009 Study in the International Journal of Sports Medicine, men who did high-intensity exercise have a 35% lower risk of all-cause mortality. For women the risk reduction is 44%. THAT’S HUGE. If you’re exercising to improve how you manage your ADHD, AND you’re getting the extra benefits of a much healthier body, then guess what: You should be paying less for your life insurance! That’s where Health IQ comes in.

Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for health conscious people including runners, cyclists, strength trainers, vegans, and more. 56% of Health IQ customers save between 4-33% on their life insurance, and these savings are exclusive to Health IQ. They save their customers up to 33% because physically active people have a 56% lower risk of heart disease, 20% lower risk of cancer and a 58% lower risk of diabetes compared to people who are inactive.

Hello everybody!  If you been all wrapped-up with Awards season, I hope you can finally catch a breath now that the 90th Academy Awards are complete. Nine-zero, wow. When it comes to formal wear, I’m usually more of a jeans&blazer kid of guy, but I do have one pair of fancy-pants on the ready for such an occasion.

Speaking of civilian dress, this week we get to sit down with a long-time listener, Harran J. Williams! Harran reached out to me a little while ago and asked if he could be a guest on the Faster Than Normal podcast. I said: “Well sure- so what’s your story”? We find out that while Harran’s resume is very impressive, he’s really just grinding it out day-to-day like you, me and most of us here with ADHD.  He’s a father of three, a volunteer at his church, a Musician, a Software Engineer, a former track star from New Jersey and just an all-around good dude.

I hope you dig getting to know Harran as much as I did.  Enjoy!

In this episode, Peter and Harran tackle hurdles like these:

2:38-  Welcome and introducing Harran

3:29-  What’s your background?

5:30-  What keeps you going?

7:00-  Did your parents push you and did you ever feel overwhelmed as a young kid?

8:40-  A week in the life, when I was going full throttle in school. Any questions?

9:48-  What are your “life rules”? How did you learn to prioritize on your own. How did you pick which things you wanted to do best?

10:28-  Choices and the choosing

10:50-  Enter college. A track scholarship to maintain

11:44-  How we with ADHD & ADD develop deadlines, or “pressure moments” and use time-lines.

13:45-  What other “life rules” have you found that have been working for you?

14:00-  If it’s not on my calendar, I don’t know about it.

14:45-  Using ambient noise and ambient music to stay focused

15:54-  How lists are massively important for us with ADHD. Google Keep, Process Street, and other sources.

18:84-  Testimony of tools that work!

19:43-  How can we find you online Harran?  http://harranjwilliams.com  @HarronJWilliams on Twitter, InstaGram, and right here on Facebook ).

Hey gang! This week we're getting to visit with my ol'friend Lenore!  Lenore Skenazy is president of the new non-profit Let Grow, dedicated to "Future-Proofing Our Kids and Our Country."

Ten years ago, after her column "Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone" landed her on every talk show from The Today Show to Dr. Phil, Skenazy founded the book and blog “Free-Range Kids,” which launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement. Her main point? Our kids are NOT in constant danger. Give them a little more freedom and everyone wins.

Now she lectures internationally, from Microsoft to Dreamworks to the Sydney Opera House, and has been profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The New Yorker. And here she is on The Daily  Show! A journalist herself, Lenore has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. Yep. Mad.  Her reality show “World’s Worst Mom,” airs on Discovery Life (from time to time, late at night, in re-runs).

A graduate of Yale and Columbia, she lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her sons have (safely) flown the coop.

In this episode, Peter and Lenore discuss:

3:05-  “Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone” / “World’s Worst Mom”

4:05-  So, how did this chapter start for you Lenore?

4:30-  “Free-Range Kids” blog. Remembering seminal moments of being a kid.

6:00-  Did you know I sliced my finger off once when I was a kid?

6:20-  Parenting dilemmas, the importance of teachable moments & “SugarBombs”.. in the year 2018.

8:48-  Children’s physical environments and the freedom to learn.

10:22-  Walking home after school in NYC, circa 1970’s.

11:04- When IS the safest time to be a kid?

11:30- Fear and the consumption of Tech.

12:38- The Let Grow Project is trying to figure out how to make a real world change for parent’s & kids.

13:00-  LetGrow.org

13:27-  Micro-initiative number 1. Begin to return to normal childhood activities.

14:25-  A few experiences & quotes from folks who have been taking part in the Let Grow project.

15:40-  Micro-initiative number 2. Free play at school, after school.

16:40-  Identifying with the concepts of the Let Grow project and how I stay focused daily, without    using meds. (Just in case you didn’t already know).

This week we’re getting to know the wonderful and entertaining Adam Sietz! All this while being a husband, a dad, and MASSIVELY ADHD.

This is going to be fun!  Enjoy!

Welcome to another episode of Faster Than Normal! Thrilled that you're here!

We're talking this week to American syndicated columnist, humorist, publisher, and speaker Randy Cassingham, probably best known for starting one of the first ever email newsletters, "This is True."

Massively ADHD, hear how he left a perfectly good job at JPL (the NASA guys) to go out on his own to do something with "that internet thing." He never looked back.

Randy's best tip: Turn off email notifications.

This episode is inspiring. I'm a huge fan of this guy. No doubt you will be, too. Enjoy!

Now then - Welcome to Tim Fargo, this week's FTN guest! Tim has one of the shortest bios known to man, which essentially says "started a company. Went bankrupt. Started another one. Sold it for $50mm. Now run Social Jukebox."

That's it. Obviously, I think there's a little more to the man than that, and you'll hear about it on this interview. And it's a good one. Got kids who have ever failed? You ever failed? This is the episode for you.

And of course, Tim is massively ADHD. We knew that from his bio, though.

Enjoy!

Most important to us, he's written several papers, and conducted several studies on entrepreneurship and ADHD.

We're so lucky to have Dr. Wiklund on the podcast today! He touches on such topics like structure (we need it,) ADHD and self-care, why "jobs are for average people" and more. This is an amazing interview - How great to be able to start the new year with it!

Enjoy!
